Accessibility glossary

Text alternative

Any text that serves the same purpose as non-text content, so it can be read, spoken, or enlarged.

“Text alternative” is the umbrella term covering alt text for images, labels for controls, and transcripts for media. Because text can be rendered as speech, braille, or large print, it’s the most flexible form of content (WCAG 1.1.1).
